The 10th anniversary Sofia Pride and march in support of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people will take place on Saturday, 10 June 2016 starting behind the Monument to the Soviet Army at 6:00 pm. Democracy is most secure when all persons live freely without fear of violence and discrimination, yet LGBTI persons continue to be regularly targeted and harassed. The U.S. Embassy therefore is proud to support the annual Sofia Pride, which is the biggest annual event dedicated to the equality and human rights of all citizens and the biggest event increasing the visibility of LGBTI people in the country. The motto for this year’s Pride is “Chase the Fear Away.” There will be colorful masks on parade that will recall Bulgaria’s kukeri traditions and tackle the prejudice and fear towards LGBTI people. Associated events include a discussion on religion and LGBTI rights on June 8 at the American Corner, a film festival June 4 to June 9, and an art week from June 9 to June 18.
