Demonstration/March in Downtown Sofia – Saturday, July 15, 2023

Event:

On Saturday, July 15, 2023, there will be a demonstration beginning at the Ministry of Finance in downtown Sofia at or around 12:00.  Demonstrators will march from the Ministry of Finance to the National Assembly.  The demonstration is scheduled to conclude at the National Assembly at or around 15:30. The demonstration concerns a labor dispute within the Ministry of Interior.

Bulgarian authorities report organizers expect five to six thousand (5,000-6,000) participants.

All U.S. citizens and their family members are advised to avoid areas impacted by this demonstration.

Anticipate road closures and an increased police presence in this area.  This may result in delays, roadblocks, and a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia.  Please note that the times and road closures are subject to change.

Actions to Take:

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
Avoid areas of demonstrations.
Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Monitor local media for updates.
Keep a low profile.
U.S. Citizens are advised to call the police (#112), seek a safe location, and wait for assistance from the police
