Message for U.S. Citizens: Anti-American Protest at National Assembly

Event:

On Saturday, June 10, 2023, a protest characterized in the local press as anti-American, will take place at the National Assembly in downtown Sofia beginning at 12:00 p.m.  Protestors will arrive in 35 buses that will park in the vicinity of the stadium.  The protest is expected to start at 12:00 at the National Assembly.  At 13:00, the protestors will march to the Council of Ministers, where they are expected to remain until 18:00.

Bulgarian authorities expect 5,000-10,000 participants.

All U.S. citizens and their family members are advised to avoid areas impacted by this demonstration.

Anticipate road closures and an increased police presence in this area.  This may result in delays, roadblocks, and a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia.  Please note that the times and road closures are subject to change.

Actions to Take:

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.

Avoid areas of demonstrations.

Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Monitor local media for updates.

Keep a low profile.

U.S. Citizens are advised to call the police (#112), seek a safe location, and wait for assistance from the police
