Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration and March – Presidency to Eagle Bridge – Friday, June 02, 2023

Event:

On Friday, June 02, 2023, there will be a demonstration beginning at the Presidency in downtown Sofia at or around 6:30 p.m. (1830). The demonstration will evolve into a march beginning at or around 7:30 p.m. (1930) to the Eagle Bridge.  The event is expected to end around 10:00 p.m. (2200).

Bulgarian authorities expect 3,000 to 5,000 to participate in the demonstration, which is reportedly in support of Bulgarian involvement in EU and NATO.

All U.S. citizens and their family members are advised to avoid areas impacted by this event.

Please anticipate road closures and an increased police presence in this area. This may result in delays, roadblocks, and in a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia. Please note that the times and routes of the march as well as road closures are subject to change.

Actions to Take:

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas of demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • U.S. Citizens are advised to call the police (#112), seek a safe location, and wait for assistance from the police
