Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration in Downtown Sofia (16 November, 2023)

Event:  Today, Thursday November 16, 2023, football fans have planned a protest outside Vasil Levski National Stadium from approximately 1700 to 2200.  Authorities expect 3,000 people, and have indicated a possibility of provocations and escalations.

The following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic:  Vasil Levski Blvd. and Gurko street, Dragan Tsankov Blvd. and Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd., and Evlogi Georgiev Blvd. to Eagle’s bridge.

U.S. citizens and their family members are advised to exercise caution in areas affected by this protest.

Please anticipate road closures and an increased police presence in this area. This may result in delays, roadblocks, and in a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia. Please note that the demonstration times and road closures are subject to change.

Actions to Take:

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
Avoid areas of demonstrations.
Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Monitor local media for updates.
Keep a low profile.
U.S. Citizens are advised to call the police (#112), seek a safe location, and wait for assistance from the police
