Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration National Assembly – Tuesday, June 6, 2023

Event:

On Tuesday, June 06, 2023, there will be a demonstration at the National Assembly in downtown Sofia at or around 12:00 p.m.  Bulgarian authorities expect the demonstration to last throughout the day and anticipate possible counter protests as well.

Bulgarian authorities expect 700-1,000 participants but note that number may swell later in the day.

All U.S. citizens and their family members are advised to avoid areas impacted by this demonstration.

Anticipate road closures and an increased police presence in this area.  This may result in delays, roadblocks, and a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia.  Please note that the times and road closures are subject to change.

Actions to Take:

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.

Avoid areas of demonstrations.

Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Monitor local media for updates.

Keep a low profile.

U.S. Citizens are advised to call the police (#112), seek a safe location, and wait for assistance from the police
