Message for U.S. Citizens: Major Events in Downtown Sofia, August 24, 2023

Event: The following events will occur today in downtown Sofia:

16:00 – Gathering in the city garden for Ukraine’s Independence Day. There is a procession planned for 19:00 to 20:30, starting from “Vazrazhdane” garden, along “Alexander Stamboliyski” Blvd. through the pedestrian zone of “St. Nedelya” church, along “Saborna” street, ending in the city garden. Following the procession, there will be a projection on the facade of the National Theater with the flags of Bulgaria and Ukraine. The event will end with a concert. Please see map below.

18:00 -Event planned around the monument of the Soviet Army for sympathizers who are against the dismantling of the monument.

20:00 – Soccer match between FC Levski and Eintracht Frankfurt, at the “Vasil Levski” National Stadium. Eintracht fans are known as some of the more excitable soccer fans in Europe. Hooliganism and criminal activity are not uncommon against small groups of fans at such matches.

Please anticipate increased traffic, road closures, and an increased police presence in these areas. This may result in delays, roadblocks, and a general increase in normal weekday traffic throughout downtown Sofia.

Actions to Take:

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
Avoid areas of demonstrations.
Exercise caution if unexpectedly found in the vicinity of large gatherings or demonstrations.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Monitor local media for updates.
Keep a low profile.
U.S. Citizens are advised to call the police (#112), seek a safe location, and wait for assistance from the police
