Respect for religious freedom is both a core American value and one of the fundamental freedoms reflected in many international human rights documents. The 2019 Report on International Religious Freedom released on June 10 details the status of religious freedom in 199 countries and territories around the world. Speaking at the launch of the report Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated, “There is no other nation that cares so deeply about religious freedom” describing the report as “a comprehensive accounting of this fundamental human right.” Ambassador for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback stressed the United States’ commitment “to build partnerships and alliances with nations who share our commitment to advance religious freedom around the world.” In February 2020 Bulgaria joined the United States and 25 other countries as a founding member of the International Religious Freedom Alliance.
