Statement by Secretary Kerry on the Occasion of Europe Day

On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the European Union as it celebrates Europe Day.

More than 65 years ago, on a continent still reeling from war, the Schuman Declaration created a vision of a united and peaceful Europe.

Today, the European Union provides an enduring example of democracy, liberty, and prosperity achieved through the common purpose of the region’s diverse peoples and governments.

The United States was founded on the democratic values we share to this day with our European partners.  Those values bring us together to face a host of political and humanitarian challenges around the world.

The European Union is an essential partner in promoting peace in Syria, countering ISIL, and combatting the scourge of terrorism.  Together we support Ukraine against Russian aggression.  We work closely together to find solutions for the global refugee crisis, which affects all of us.  The European Union was essential to the conclusion of the climate change agreement in Paris in December, and in bringing about the landmark deal with Iran to reduce the threat from nuclear weapons.

We are also striving to increase transatlantic cooperation and prosperity through the negotiation of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

As the members of the European Union commemorate this Europe Day, the people of the United States proudly stand with you as friends and partners.

Together, we will continue to build a better and brighter future for both our peoples and the global community.
