On April 5, U.S. environmental expert and National Geographic Explorer Dr. Jenna Jambeck visited Burgas to speak with students studying ecology and environmental science at Burgas Technical University. She also joined Burgas municipal officials, local environmental experts and activists, and Port of Burgas representatives at a roundtable titled “The Clean Black Sea Challenge.” Dr. Jambeck, who is an associate professor at the University of Georgia and an internationally recognized authority on the topic of ocean plastic waste, shared her concern about the growing production of plastics in developed nations and the lack of reciprocal plastics recycling capacity. She also offered a possible intervention framework for plastic waste reduction, including industry-led reduction of plastics production, consumer-led plastics demand decrease, waste generation reduction, and improvement of global waste management and litter capture.
